Cullowhee High School, also known as Cullowhee Academy, was founded in 1889. Its first two buildings were a wood frame classroom building and the Music and Art Building.

Davies Hall was Cullowhee Normal and Industrial School’s first dormitory. Built in 1909 to house the school’s women students, it was occupied in January, 1910.

Hoey Auditorium was built in 1939 during a period of growth for Western Carolina Teachers College. Named for Governor Clyde Hoey, the building housed classrooms and the music department. The auditorium could seat 900 people.

Robert Lee Madison (1867–1954), the school's founder, served as first president of Cullowhee High School, later Cullowhee Normal and Industrial School, from 1889-1912 and also 1920-1923.
