Description

This photograph of the Driver family was taken around 1940 and shows two split white oak baskets, one a small berry bucket style basket, and a larger market basket. Such baskets were commonly used for carrying burdens, large and small, including household and personal items as well as agricultural products. Small baskets were often used to gather berries, nuts, and mushrooms from the forest, while larger ones were used to carry vegetables from the field or garden, or to transport dry foodstuffs to or from market. A wide variety of colors to create patterns could be obtained through the use of natural dyes like black walnut root (brown); butternut tree root (a darker brown); bloodroot (orange); or yellowroot (yellow) to obtain contrasting colors and patterns. The photographer's name is unknown.
