Description
This photograph shows a Cherokee basket weaver, Alice Walkingstick demonstrating at the Oconaluftee Indian Village. Located on the Qualla Boundary, lands belonging to the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, the village features recreated Cherokee dwellings and the demonstration of traditional Cherokee skills by Cherokee craftspeople that were in place in 1750. In this demonstration, Walkingstick works on a rivercane basket. At her feet are two rivercane ""purse"" baskets and, in the center, a rivercane double weave basket. Other craft demonstrations at the village include beadwork, woodworking, pottery making, fingerweaving, making and using blowguns and animal traps, and making dugout canoes. The photograph's date and the name of the photographer are unknown.
