This photograph shows a Cherokee potter, Mabel Bigmeat Swimmer (1925-1991) demonstrating at the Oconaluftee Indian Village. Located on the Qualla Boundary, lands belonging to the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, the village features recreated Cherokee dwellings and the demonstration of traditional Cherokee skills by Cherokee craftspeople that were in place in 1750. In this demonstration, Bigmeat is smoothing the inside of an incised piece of pottery. Other craft demonstrations at the village include beadwork, woodworking, pottery making, fingerweaving, making and using blowguns and animal traps, and making dugout canoes. The photograph's date and the name of the photographer are unknown.
