Description
This 1970s photograph, photographer unknown, is of Wahdih "Watty" Chiltoskie (1897-1973), a woodcarver who lived and worked on the Qualla Boundary in western North Carolina. Watty Chiltoskie was the older brother of another well-known Cherokee woodcarver, Goingback Chiltoskey (1907-2000), Both sold their carvings through various regional shops such as the Southern Highland Handicraft Guild's Allanstand shop and the Qualla Arts and Crafts Mutual cooperative. In some records, Chiltoskie's last name is also spelled "Chiltosky" or "Chiltoskey."
