Description
This undated photograph by an unknown photographer shows a woman carrying a child on her back. In her right hand is a Cherokee style white oak split market basket. White oak baskets with handles were employed by Cherokee women for a variety of uses, including gardening and shopping. Baskets featured a variety of designs created by dyeing the splints or splits with natural dyes like black walnut root (varying shades of brown), butternut root (black), butternut tree root (black or dark brown), bloodroot (varying shades of orange or reddish brown), or yellowroot (light orange or yellow) to obtain contrasting colors.
