Description

The Lossiah sisters were basket weavers and enrolled members of the Eastern Band of Cherokee. They grew up in the Big Cove community of the Qualla Boundary, in western North Carolina. Pictured here are Maggie Lossiah and her sister Jane Lossiah Taylor. They are posed behind an array of their white oak baskets. Their sisters Dorothy and Martha (Ross) also made baskets. Also notable in this photograph are other artifacts: a pelt on the wall, a birdhouse gourd, a wooden bench, and the log cabin itself. This spelling of Lossiah is traditional; the name is sometimes spelled Lossie. The photographer's name is unknown.
