Description

This four-page brochure was created by the Indian Arts and Crafts Board, a division of the U.S. Department of Interior, to accompany a 1978 exhibition of “Doubleweave Rivercane Basketry by Eva Wolfe.” The exhibitions were held at Qualla Arts and Crafts Mutual, an artisan cooperative in Cherokee, North Carolina. Eva Queen Wolfe (1922-2004) was a Cherokee basket maker who specialized in double weave rivercane baskets. The exhibiton featured Wolfe’s rivercane baskets, all of them double weave. In this brochure, Wolfe comments that her rivercane baskets are in demand. From 1969 through 1985, the Indian Arts and Crafts Board and Qualla Arts and Crafts Mutual, Inc. sponsored a series of exhibitions to promote Cherokee crafts. The brochures for these exhibits were reformatted and republished as “Contemporary Artists and Craftsmen of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians” in 1987.
