Description
This four-page brochure was produced to accompany a 1970 exhibition of work by Cherokee sculptor and woodcarver Amanda Crowe. The exhibit was held at Qualla Arts and Crafts Mutual and included 15 pieces in terra cotta, walnut, cherry, and buckeye. The exhibition brochure was produced by Qualla Arts and Crafts Mutual, and the Indian Arts and Craft Board. A member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee, Amanda Crowe (1928-2004) is known for figurative wood sculptures; she was particularly known for her expressive bears. Her animal figures are highly stylized and smoothly carved. For almost 40 years, Crowe taught art and wood carving at Cherokee High School. In 2000, she was the recipient of a North Carolina Folk Heritage Award.
