Description

This pocket size Civil War diary of Absalom Joshua Burum (1828-1892) was created in 1864. Burum, a native of Tennessee, joined Colonel Thomas’ regiment September 27, 1862 and, as first sergeant, fought alongside Colonel William Stringfield and the rest of the Legion for over two and a half years. He shared much of the misery, suffering, and horrors of combat endured by the command. Of the 2,500 men who served in the Legion, Burum was to stay with it almost to the last. The diary, while typical of Civil War soldiers (containing mostly weather reports) does track the Legion’s movements thoroughly in 1864. Click the link in the Related Materials field to view Judy H. Leas 1965 thesis and annotated transcript of Burum’s diary.
