Description

This 1940s postcard shows three "Basket Makers at work" in Cherokee, North Carolina. The basket weavers are all members of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians and are working on white oak ribbed baskets. Standing is Rachel Taylor, whose mother was basket maker Julia Ned Taylor. Her sisters, Dolly Taylor, Pauline Taylor Junaluska, and Sally Taylor Wade were also basket weavers. The young woman at left is unidentified; the older woman at right is Nicey Walkingstick Lossiah, Rachel Taylor’s aunt.
