Description
This photograph taken in the 1920s shows John Hall and his wife carving wood on the porch of their home. John Hall was a member of the woodcarving cooperative founded at the John C. Campbell Folk School which later became known as the Brasstown Carvers. Hall was most known for what he called his "mad mules." John Hall also carved the figures from the nativity scenes known as "crèches" with wise men as a specialty. The Hall family is legendary for the quality of their woodcarvings.
