Description
This cornhusk doll was made by May Ritchie Deschamps (1896-1982) of Swannanoa, North Carolina, ca. late 1940s. The doll wears a hat and elaborate dress made of dark-colored shucks. The woman is carrying a basket, has fingers and hair. There is a tag attached to her with "Allanstand Mountain Crafts" of the Southern Highland Handicraft Guild indicating this item was probably offered for sale in the Allanstand Craft Shop. Deschamps is part of the Ritchie family of cornhusk doll-makers, whose figures are characterized by several unique wrapping techniques that are not used in other cornhusk traditions.
