This woodcarving depicts a woman nursing a baby and was made by Wade Martin (1920-2005) of Swannanoa, N.C. during the late 1940s. The woman is sitting on a bench, has long hair, is wearing a dress, but no shoes. Martin's initials, "WHM," are carved into the bottom of the bench. Wade Hampton Martin was a well-known woodcarver from the Swannanoa area of Buncombe County. He was part of a family of renowned artisans, most of whom were woodcarvers and musicians. Wade Martin's subjects were generally typical Appalachian mountain folks depicted in everyday activities.
