Description

This photograph of two hands carving small animals was taken by Doris Ulmann in 1933. The hands on the right belong to Olive Dame Campbell, founder of the John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, N.C. The hands on the left belong to John Jacob Niles, who accompanied Ulmann to Brasstown and later returned to serve as music director at the Folk School in 1935. A hand-woven coverlet appears in the background.
