Description

The central figure of the photograph is an unidentified man using a freshly cut tree as the basis for his job of making shingles. He appears to be using a draw knife, a common tool used for woodworking. To the right, a second figure is sawing a tree trunk. The photograph was probably taken in the late 1890s or early 1900s. It appears in Frances Goodrich's photograph album documenting her work with the Shelton Laurel community in Madison County, North Carolina, where she set up the Allanstand Cottage Industries in 1896.
