Description

This mounted photograph shows Elmeda Walker (b. 1837) and her sister Martha McHargue (b. 1842 and sometimes identified as Caroline) outside of a mountain cabin in the late 1890s or early 1900s. Walker is on the left seated at a small spinning wheel which she is using for "filling quills." The quill is a part of a weaving shuttle, which carries the thread that becomes the weft. McHargue is on the right and is in the process of carding wool. Both women lived near Allanstand, N.C. Walker worked closely with Frances Goodrich to teach the local women spinning and weaving and her work was used n the White House during Woodrow Wilson's presidency. This photograph was used in Goodrich's book "Mountain Homespun." Photographs of Walker were often used in articles written by Goodrich and in the Allanstand shop brochures.
