Description
This article was written by Helen R. Albee and published in the "American Monthly Review of Reviews," around 1898. In this article, Albee encourages philanthropists to look at the funding of the arts and crafts as a way of helping people in rural areas of the United States. Her message seems to reflect rhetoric from two "movements:" arts and crafts aesthetic and vocational education, which were catching on in the U.S. at this time. The article places Frances Goodrich's work reviving weaving in the western North Carolina mountains in context with similar work being done in other locales. Albee mentions several successful craft production industries including lace made by Minnesota Indians, embroidery at Deerfield, Mass., leatherwork in California and Minnesota, rugmaking in Pequaket, N.H., and the work in North Carolina to "restore hand-weaving." The article is illustrated with one of Frances Goodrich's watercolor of a weaver and photographs of weaving patterns.
