Description

This article on how to reseat chairs was written by Harriet Cushman Wilkie and published in the March 1917 issue of "The Modern Priscilla." The article details how to weave chair seats using natural materials such as cattail leaves, cornhusks, raffia, bark, and twine. Although Wilkie presents these instructions for the average housewife's use in re-doing worn out seats, this same method was used for making seats in new chairs such as those make by the Mace and Woody family of chairmakers and sold through Allanstand Cottage Industries. At the time this article was written, Wilkie was managing the Allanstand shop in Asheville, N.C.
