Description
This cow blanket, was made by Kate Clayton Donaldson (ca. 1864-1960), more commonly known as "Granny" Donaldson, of Marble, North Carolina. The blanket consist of a backing or ground made of a solid homespun fabric to which hand crocheted animals, trees, flowers and people are applied. According to Allen Eaton in Handicrafts of the Southern Highlands, Donaldson saw a similar blanket used in Italy to drape over the backs of cows during festivals and created her own version. This particular blanket dates to the 1930s.
