Description

Brown's Pottery was a family business "until taken over by commercial firm 3 or 4 years ago" (Valor Ware). D.P. Brown's son, Louis, was the fifth generation to work in clay. "Louis, the son, modeled little clay pigs, and Ruth, the daughter, made a few little animals. Mr. Brown taught on government craft projects during depression." The little clay pigs became popular when they caught the eye of Eleanor Roosevelt. Questionnaires like this one were the raw data for the exploratory study of the Craft Education Project, a joint undertaking by the Southern Highland Handicraft Guild and the Southern Highlanders. Marian Heard was hired to oversee the planning phase that involved visiting artists and determining the needs of the craftworkers. Her results, referred to as "The Heard Report," were published as the "Report of an exploratory study looking toward a craft education project ...." The preliminary project led to an educational program funded by the General Education Board.
