Description
These drill bits were contained in a tool chest belonging to woodworker Jesse Bryson Stalcup. Auger or drill bits fit into a brace. The brace chuck adjusts to accept different-sized shanks that these drill bits exhibit. The bits are made from fairly soft steel and can be hand-sharpened with a file. The small drill points on the tip help pull the bit into the wood being drilled. Stalcup was a skilled carpenter, millwright, and woodworker who worked in and around Waynesville and Macon County, North Carolina, as well as Hiawassee, Georgia, circa 1880s-1930. The chest contains a variety of woodworking tools typically used by craftsmen in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
