Description

John C. Campbell Folk School published a series of newsletters from 1926 to 1950. Written like a letter from the school's director, the newsletter is a source of information about the classes and activities at the Folk School and their impact on the surrounding community. This newsletter opens with how the school has met neighbors through repair work on the Farm House and participation in weekly gymnastics (held on the Farm House lawn) led by Georg Bidstrup, and tells of hoping to instigate community initiatives such as a Savings and Loan Association and a Women's Community Club. Stressed is the importance of the Folk School farm as a "demonstration station" for teaching good agricultural practices. Leon Deschamps is introduced through his role as forester who "surveyed the place, laid out roads, directed building, and kept a regular account of spring flow for future water supply." Funds are needed for a "Community House", and as funds allow, a Community Room will exist first to provide a place for lectures, song, gymnastics, and social events. The newsletter closes by reporting that pledges are being fulfilled by the community and the schools hopes to open in 1927.
