Description

The Southern Mountain Handicraft Guild met for its annual membership meeting in Gatlinburg, Tennessee on April 1, 1932. Meeting minutes generally contain committee reports, financial statement, new members list, announcements of regional events, and discussion about special issues facing the organization. At this meeting Marguerite Butler (later Marguerite Butler Bidstrup) introduced Agnes Loeffler, the manager of the Allanstand shop. Lucy Morgan spoke about the plans for the Chicago World's Fair. Allen Eaton talked about the newly formed American Federation of Arts. Clementine Douglas presented ideas for the new Guild emblem - a cabin silhouetted against the mountains. Lucy Morgan spoke about "Mr. O"Neil's Exhibit in Chicago" which included Guild members. Allen Eaton told about his visit to the Cherokee reservation, Cherokee crafts persons showed examples of their work, and plans were made for their membership in the Guild. Membership was up to 25 production centers. The Southern Highland Handicraft Guild was founded in 1930 as the Southern Mountain Handicraft Guild. The name was changed in 1933 and again in the 1990s to the Southern Highland Craft Guild.
