Description
This is an invitation to an annual exhibit and sale of crafts from the John C. Campbell Folk School, held in New Jersey in the 1930s. The invitation briefly describes the purpose of the Folk School and how the practice of traditional handicraft provided financial support as well as a means of unifying the community. The cover illustration is a print by June Coolidge Cary, niece of Olive Dame Campbell, and teacher of art and design at the John C. Campbell Folk School from 1938 through the early 1940s. The print is reminiscent of a Granny Donaldson Cow Blanket. This event was organized by Louise Pitman, head of the Handicraft Department of the Folk School. Pitman, a New Jersey native and a Columbia University graduate, used her connections outside of the Appalachian region to market Folk School crafts nationwide. The sale was held at the home of Louise Pitman's parents.
