Description
This painted stoneware figure of Mary with the Christ child was made by Clara Maude Cobb Hilton (1885-1969) probably between 1925 and 1935. Hilton Pottery was a family pottery which made functional pottery starting just after the Civil War. The pottery, originally located in Catawba County, moved to McDowell County in 1934. Clara Hilton took over the pottery after her husband's death, adding a line of decorative work and figurines for which she became known. Creche figures were popular items and a finer clay was imported for the figurines.
