Description

This mat was woven by Alice Pratt (1899-1990), a weaver from Buncombe County, North Carolina who was actively producing and selling her woven good from the 1930s until the latter half of the 20th century. This table mat was made more recently, but it is an example of work done with "loopers." Loopers were a waste product from North Carolina cotton mills and were sold or given to local weavers and rug makers. The name comes from the fact that they were cut from socks and t-shirting and tended to be circular pieces, or loops.
