Description

This hand carved picture frame was produced by the Tryon Toy-Makers and Wood-Carvers in the late 1910s or 1920s. Eleanor Vance and Charlotte Yale began their craft teaching in Asheville, North Carolina working for Mr. and Mrs. George W. Vanderbilt but moved to Tryon, N.C. before World War I. They started making wooden toys and decorative items as the Tryon Toy Makers and Wood Carvers. The women apprenticed young people to carve and paint toys and other objects. Eleanor Vance was an accomplished woodcarver and designed many pieces in the Arts and Crafts style. The particular frame features a Florentine design with a hinged support in the back.
