This photograph, taken around 1935, shows Sally and Clarence Fleming carving on the porch of their house in Brasstown, North Carolina. The Flemings were known for their whimsical carved animals; Sally specialized in pigs with curly tails. They sold their carvings through the woodcarving cooperative at the John C. Campbell Folk School which became known as the Brasstown Carvers.
