Description

This St. Francis sculpture was carved by Dexter Dockery in walnut, a difficult wood to work. Dockery learned to carve at the John C. Campbell Folk School under instructor Murrial Martin along with Jack Hall sold his work through the Folk School's woodcarving cooperative that became known as the Brasstown Carvers. In the 1930s and 1940s, St. Francis was a favorite motif among Craft Revival leaders; Olive Campbell collected several. John C. Campbell Folk School teacher, Murrial Martin recalled that the first St. Francis was made at the request of Rev. Rufus Morgan, an Episcopal minister and brother of craft promoter Lucy Morgan
