Description
This fox, made by Ben Hall (1885-1963), was made from cherry, a hard wood to carve. Hall was one of several carvers in the extended Hall family that lived in the Warne community east of Brasstown. Born Aaron Ben Hall, but known to all as Ben, he his two brothers, John and Elisha, were both carvers. Hall produced carvings from the 1930s to the 1950s that were sold through the John C. Campbell Folk School's woodcarving cooperative that became known as the Brasstown Carvers. According to Folk School carving teacher Murrial Martin, Ben Hall was among the first of her students. She called him "a great inspiration to me" and a "skillful natural born carver." Hall was a prolific carver; in 1942 he was listed as having earned more than $750 through the woodcarving cooperative, more than any other carver, except for Avery Beaver.
