Description

This handwoven throw was made by Helen Wilmer Stone Viner (ca. 1891-1978) of Saluda, North Carolina during the 1930s and features natural dyed yarns. The entire piece is trmimed with a brown fringe. Helen Wilmer Stone was born in New Orleans, Louisiana and came to North Carolina by way of Pine Mountain Settlement School in Kentucky where she learned how to dye with natural vegetable dyes from Katherine Pettit. Stone moved to Saluda, married, and opened The Weave Shop in 1923 as retail store and production center, employing several local women to dye and weave. The shop produced, wall hangings, table linens, and blankets.
