Description
The Southern Highland Handicraft Guild met for its fall membership meeting in Cherokee, North Carolina on October 8 and 9, 1940. Meeting minutes generally contain committee reports, financial statements, new members, announcements of regional events, and discussion about special issues facing the organization. At this particular meeting Lucy Morgan reported on a meeting that she and Allen Eaton had with the National Park Service. They were shown three possible shop sites in the Shenandoah National Park. Marguerite Bidstrup reported for the Education Committee on master craftsman certification requirements. Isadora Williams spoke for the Publicity Committee. She suggested that a color movie be made featuring the crafts of the region. Allen Eaton's collection of crafts from the World's Fair were on display in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Louise Pitman reported that Mrs. Z.C. Patten has "offered to loan to the Guild a water mill and house" in Russellville, Tennessee. Dr. Foster reported that many people were visiting the Guild exhibit at the Asheville Normal School. The Southern Highland Handicraft Guild was founded in 1930 as the Southern Mountain Handicraft Guild. The name was changed to the Southern Highland Handicraft Guild in 1933 and again in the 1990s to the Southern Highland Craft Guild.
