Description

The Highland Highlights was a newsletter "published every once in a while by the Southern Highland Handicraft Guild." It usually gave members news from the shops, information from and about Guild meetings, tips and reminders, as well as news of general interest. This issue (Vol. 1, No. 5) was produced during World War II. For the past two years, the guild’s Education Committee had endeavored to create definitions of three levels of members—Apprentice Craftsman, Craftsman, and Master Craftsman—as well as standards for each. In Part II of this issue, Marguerite Bidstrup drafts “Proposed Standards for Apprentice Craftsman” and indicates that Clementine Douglas will write Standards for Craftsmen. Marguerite (Butler) Bidstrup, affiliated with the John C. Campbell Folk School, is Chairman of the Education Committee. Enclosed with this issue were copies of new tags developed by Berea College, that include the Southern Highland Handicraft Guild logo, to advertise hearth brooms made by the college Student Industries. Berea was a founding member of the guild.
