This photograph shows J.A. Morris carving on the porch. Morris began carving in the 1940s. He studied under Murray Martin, one of the Folk School's first carving instructors. His first carvings were in apple, but he also carved in black walnut and butternut. His favorite subjects were squirrels and rabbits. Morris gave numerous carving demonstrations throughout the region and demonstrated his techniques at the 1982 World's Fair in Knoxville. This photograph was taken from a booklet published by the John C. Campbell Folk School in 1990 titled "The Brasstown Carvers" with text by Bill Biggers, photographs by Werner Kahn and Bill Biggers
