Description
It is not known who made this large rivercane basket. Baskets of this shape and size were used to transport agricultural products. The large basket with handle was probably used to gather vegetables from the field or garden; it could have also been used as a market basket to transport dry foodstuffs to or from market. The handle is woven into and beneath the basket to give it strength, allowing its user to carry heavy loads. The basket was woven upward from a rectangular base to an oval rim and lashed at the top for reinforcement. Its sturdy form and the fact that the basket is not dyed or decorated is an indication that it was made for function rather than as a decorative or trade item.
