William Perry Smith, commonly known as Willie Smith, lost both legs in a train accident. He was able to support his family with the earnings he made from carving dolls and roosters. Two of his dolls stand in the foreground while he works on a rooster. The photograph was taken by Edward L. Dupuy at the 1951 Craftman's Fair of the Southern Highlands in Asheville, North Carolina.
