Description

This undated photograph of Cherokee baskets was taken by Edward L. DuPuy for the Indian Arts and Crafts Board. The variety of basket styles and materials in this photograph reflects the many kinds of baskets made by Cherokee craftspeople. The tall storage basket on the left is made of white oak, as is the market basket beside it. The two lidded baskets in the middle are also white oak. The rivercane baskets to the right show intricate designs typical of traditional Cherokee basketry, including Star on the Mountain, and Chief's Daughters on the taller basket. The splits used to form the patterns were dyed with natural dyes like black walnut root (varying shades of brown); butternut tree root (black or dark brown); bloodroot (varying shades of orange or reddish brown); or yellowroot (light orange or yellow) to obtain contrasting colors. The makers and dates of these baskets are unknown.
