Description

It is not known who made this rivercane wall basket, although its weaving is typical of the style made by Eastern Band Cherokee. Cherokee basket weavers made baskets for a variety of functions. This two-handled wall basket, used to hold foodstuffs and household goods, is uncommon and not a traditional form. A single weave basket, the natural aeration of the weave allows held goods to remain dry. This wall basket was woven from rivercane that was dyed using walnut for the brown color and bloodroot for the orange. Rivercane, walnut, and bloodroot are native plants of the region. The central motif is a variation of Chief's Daughter design.
