Description
Written by President Louise L. Pitman, this announcement describes upcoming events planned for a 1941 meeting of the Southern Highland Handicraft Guild. Such a meeting was held each spring in Knoxville, Tennessee since the Guild’s founding in 1930. Pitman announces that, this year, the Southeastern Arts Association will be meeting at a nearby hotel and that the theme of that event is “Crafts in Education.” Handicrafts advocate Allen Eaton is featured speaker and guild members are invited to attend. Isadora Williams is arranging an exhibit that will be shown during the Southeastern Arts convention. The announcement illustrates how the Guild networked with other organizations to promote crafts and the work of its members. A final announcement by the Chairman of the Education Committee, Marguerite Butler Bidstrup of the John C. Campbell Folk School, concerns qualifications for “master craftsmen” and “apprentice craftsmen,” two categories of guild membership. Pitman was Crafts Director at the John C. Campbell Folk School and later moved to Asheville.
