Description

This undated fishing basket was made by Cherokee basket weaver Katie Jane Queen. The small upright basket is made with white oak splits. Woven upward from a rectangular base, the basket necks in before flaring outward to an oval rim. The oak strips used are of varying sizes, with wider strips at the bottom and narrower strips woven into the upper half of the basket. Fishing baskets were used by Eastern Band Cherokee who would harvest fish from the region’s many rivers. The narrow opening of the basket would allow fish to swim in but not out, trapping them. The basket strips are not dyed, leaving natural the color of the white oak.
