Description
It is not known who made this undated white oak basket. Large, handled baskets of this shape and size were traditionally used to transport agricultural products, to gather vegetables from the field or garden or to take dry foodstuffs to market. The handle is woven into and beneath the basket to give it strength, allowing its user to carry heavy load. Typically, baskets with rounded bottoms were used to gather eggs; the round bottom allows the eggs to settle into the bottom of the basket to prevent breakage from rolling around. This basket is too large for that pupose. The basket is not dyed and shows signs of wear, indicating that it had been well used. The basket is rib construction.
