Description

It is not known who made this undated market basket. The flat-bottomed rectangular basket is made with white oak. Large, handled baskets of this shape and size were traditionally used to transport agricultural products, to gather vegetables from the field or garden or to take dry foodstuffs to market. The handle is woven into and beneath the basket to give it strength, allowing its user to carry heavy load. The bands of brown color appear to be dyed with walnut, a traditional native dye plant among Easter Band Cherokee. The bright orange color may be from bloodroot. With such fine decoration, the basket was more likely made to be taken shopping, rather used in a garden.
