Description
This photograph depicts the community Weaving Cabin adjacent to the Appalachian School near Penland, North Carolina circa 1927-1935. The Weaving Cabin served as the center for the community weavers organized by Lucy Morgan in 1923 as the Fireside Industries. Their name was changed to the Penland Weavers and Potters in 1928. The cabin was erected in May 1926 with logs and labor contributed by local residents. This photograph was taken by Bayard Wootten circa 1927-33. Wootten's automobile can be seen to the left of the cabin behind the arbor. From 1923 to 1938 the Appalachian School served as the umbrella institution under which the Penland Weavers and Potters were organized and Penland School of Handicrafts (now Penland School of Crafts) was established.
