Dublin Core

Title

Fiber tools: spinning wheel bobbins

Subject

Spinning -- Appalachian Region, Southern
Textile machinery

Description

This is a selection of bobbins which would fit into the flyer of a spinning wheel. One of the central bobbins still has cotton thread on it. There is a hole down the center of each bobbin where the flyer shaft is inserted to hold it in place on the wheel. The groove at one end is where the drive band fits to turn the bobbin as it takes up the spun thread. These bobbins likely date to between 1850 and 1940; their creator is unknown.
