Description

This black and white photograph is of a ribbed white oak basket with handle that was made by Cherokee basket weaver Katie Panther. Katie Panther was born into a family of basket weavers. Her mother was Minda Wolfe (Minda Hill Sequoyah Wolfe, 1897-1983). Her aunt, Alice Sequoyah Walkingstick demonstrated basketry at the Oconaluftee Indian Village. She and her four sisters made white oak and rib-constructed baskets. The ribbed white oak basket shown here was dyed with walnut and bloodroot to achieve a natural coloration. The name of the photographer is unknown.
