Although Betty DuPree (1929-2012) was born and raised in Cherokee, North Carolina, she lived much of her adult years away from the area, having accompanied her husband to the Southwest where he worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs. She returned to Cherokee in 1973 and took on the management of Qualla Arts and Crafts Mutual, an artist cooperative. She remained as manager for 24 years, retiring in 1997. Before she left, Qualla Arts celebrated its 50th anniversary, three hundred members strong. In this photograph, DuPree (second from right) stands with Mollie Blankenship (third from right) and Joan Mondale (fourth from right), wife of Vice President Mondale. The group is watching Nancy Conseen make a basket. The photograph was made on June 7, 1977 when Mrs. Mondale attended the ground breaking of the Folk Art Center on the Blue Ridge Parkway near Asheville, NC. Mondale was accompanied by the wife of the U.S. Senator from North Carolina, Robert B. Morgan, and Mrs. Lana Gudger, wife of Vonno Lamar Gudger, a U.S. Congressman from North Carolina's 11th District. The photographer's name is unknown.
