Description
Clara Maude Cobb Hilton's daughter, Ernestine Sigmon, wrote this brief biography of her mother in 1969. She describes how her father developed a pottery business in the days when "stoneware" was utilitarian and found in every kitchen. As the business turned to more decorative pieces, Maude Hilton became involved and started making doll heads and decorating pottery. The card advertises the business. The noted "Dogwood Pottery" was Maude Hilton's contribution. The pottery, originally located in Catawba County, moved to McDowell County in 1934. Clara Hilton (1885-1969) took over the pottery after her husband's death, adding a line of decorative work and figurines for which she became known.
