This photograph was taken for the United States Department of the Interior, Indian Arts and Crafts Board. A caption that accompanied the photograph reads: "Finished buckeye wood warrior's mask, made by Allen Long." At right are some of the carver's tools. Cherokee carver Allen Long (1917-1983) was the son of Will West Long (1870-1947), Cherokee medicine man and an authority on Cherokee cultural traditions. Long learned to carve from his father when he was12 years old. In 1975, the Indian Arts and Crafts Board and Qualla Arts and Crafts Mutual honored Allen Long with an exhibition of his work.
