Description
This picture of a group of hikers at Mount LeConte was taken by James E. (Jim) Thompson (1880-1976), a noted photographer, hiker, and outdoor enthusiast who played a major role in promoting a national park in the Southern Appalachians. On the back of the photograph, someone has written that it was this trip, in October 1924, that inspired the formation of the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club. The names of the people in the group is also written on the back of the photograph.
